EXHIBITION PROPOSAL GUIDELINES

601Artspace is now accepting project proposals for exhibitions that advance the space’s mission of furthering the conversation on contemporary art. As we have neither a commercial nor an academic agenda, we endeavor to support projects with an unusual vision that might not otherwise find a home. We are interested in challenging artists to think like curators, and curators to think like artists. 601Artspace is connected to an extensive collection of contemporary art that we invite curators and artists to explore and draw upon as a resource.

We offer a minimum stipend of $5000 to curators we select, intended as a compensation for their work. Additional funds are granted based on the scope of the proposal. Exhibition costs will be covered separately. This stipend takes into account the extensive amount of research that goes into a curatorial proposal, as well as the work required to present an outstanding exhibition. We expect curators to work closely with our staff and be actively involved in the entire exhibition process, from coordinating with artists and galleries to developing materials and programming for the exhibition.

Exhibitions typically run for 2-3 months. We ask curators to develop at least two programming events to complement the exhibition.

Submissions are reviewed quarterly. The next deadline is October 28th, 2024.  Selected curators will be invited to meet with the 601Artspace team to discuss their submissions, and will be given access to an online database of our contemporary art collection. We consider proposals to be idea-driven starting points, and expect that the exhibition will evolve and be finalized in conversation with the 601Artspace team. Submissions are preferred in the following form:

1. Several paragraphs describing the theme and approach of the exhibition. Questions we often ask are: What makes this exhibition timely? How does it differ from what we are seeing at other venues? What is at stake?

2. A short bio of the curator/curators. Artists, even those without curatorial experience, are encouraged to apply.

3. A selection of artwork being proposed or considered, with explanations if appropriate. These images should give us a clear sense of the curatorial vision, but do not need to represent a final or complete list of works.

Submissions should be sent in one PDF to proposals [at] 601artspace.org. Please put “Proposal -Your Name” in the subject line, and include how you heard about the call in the body of your email. You will be contacted by 601Artspace if your proposal is being considered for an exhibition.
