A few years ago, I began documenting mushrooms in Brazil and became acquainted with and fascinated by the huge amount of research that had been made about them in recent years. Although mushrooms and mould are the visible part of a Fungus, most of their bodies are made up of thin threads (mycelia) which grow deep underground creating a network of communication between surrounding plants and organisms. In this challenging global crisis where so much of our social, biological and economical dynamics are being questioned, we may look at these complex ecological systems as a ‘helpful reminder that all life-forms are in fact processes not things’ (Merlin Sheldrake, Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds & Shape Our Futures)
